GUATEMALA: UN mission leaves but violence still major problem

The UN Verification Mission in Guatemala, Minugua, will leave after ten years in operation next December. Minugua, which was established to oversee the 1996 peace accords which brought an end to the 36-year civil war, issued its final report on 30 September. The report highlighted a number of 'impressive accomplishments' in Guatemala. A parallel report drawn up by The Washington Office on Latin America (Wola) left it in no doubt that there is a long way to go if the country wants to move beyond the legacy of violence.
